Put the Needle on the Record to Open VisionFest in New York City

Published Jul 11, 2005

VisionFest 2005 has officially announced its partial line-up for this year’s film festival, which runs July 20- 24, 2005, at the newly restored venue, Tribeca Cinemas (corner of Canal & Varick streets) in Manhattan, which feature state-of-theart projection and digital sound. The festival kicks off its opening night with Jason Rem’s hypnotizing documentary film, ‘PUT THE NEEDLE ON THE RECORD’, which delves deeply into the heart-thumping realm of the Electronic House Music culture, its origins, and the ‘superstar DJs’ and clubgoers who have elevated this once ‘underground’ music craze into a legitimate, quasi-mainstream musical genre.

Festival co-director and programmer, Bruno Derlin, enthusiastically praised the film, saying: “While some of our advisors have expressed concern with the notion that kicking off this film festival with a documentary feature might prove a bit risky, we remain confident that the musical energy of this film and the dynamic sound execution would undeniably set a tone for the artistic integrity and quality of films one can expect from the rest of our 2005 line- up.” Mark Doyle, VF05 co-director and programmer, echoed his feelings about the upcoming fest’s line- up: “We’ve had some truly grueling sessions trying to come up with the best possible program from a mountain of domestic entries. We also have a bunch of returning filmmakers and that’s a clear sign that we’re achieving something very special with this festival and that our domestic filmmaking mission is being fulfilled.”

The award winning documentary has also been invited to screen at the upcoming Winnipeg International Film Festival. “We loved the film and look forward to giving it a lot of attention during the festival,” said Rod Bruinooge, Festival Director. He continued, “As a documentary filmmaker myself, it’s good to see when someone gets it right.” The film will screen in Winnipeg, Canada on SATURDAY, JUNE 11th at 4:00pm at the Ramada Theatre Four. A recent review from Jason Lewis at FFWD Magazine declared, “This film is a whirlwind exploration of DJ culture and the history of those who work behind the decks. From the genesis of Detroit house to the clubs of Ibiza, ‘Put the Needle on the Record’ avoids being a rote music history lesson by having the biggest DJs in the world tell their own stories alongside the most exciting up and comers. Even if you aren’t into trance, deep house or techno Jason Rem’s conversational approach to the DJ revolution is a must-see for any music lover.”

Mr. Derlin from New York’s VisionFest continued, “With the house music scene once again on the rise in NYC, I think audiences will be very interested in catching an up close and personal glimpse at notable DJ/producer personalities such as Christopher Lawrence, Danny Tenaglia, and Paul Oakenfold, who all appear in Put The Needle On The Record.” He also stated, “Director Jason Rem’s riveting doc about ‘house music culture’ puts the rhythm on VisionFest ‘05, kicking off its official five- day line-up on July 20, 2005 and a colossal after- party to keep in theme with the opening night program is currently in the works. VF05 marketing team, Phase1, will provide details as they become available and tickets for all programs will go on sale online on June 20, 2005” For more on ‘Put the Needle on the Record’ visit www.dj-film.com.
