Over the past decade and a half, Jamaica Queens native, DJ Superstar Jay has proven to be much more than your average mix-tape deejay. Gracing the tables since the age of 12, under the tutelage of turntable greats Kid Capri, Ron G. and DJ Clue, it wasn’t long before Jay was labeled a mixing prodigy.
Once Jay realized that he could parlay his passion into a viable career, he set his sights on conquering the Big Apple. In 2001, Jay returned to NYC after a three year stint at Buffalo State College, where he received a basketball scholarship. With his raw talent and hustler’s ambition, Jay’s mixtapes attracted the attention and respect of rap fans worldwide. Since his emergence in New York, Jay has displayed that his dedication and work ethic are the reason that he has solidified a well deserved spot as one of the hottest new deejays on the scene. DJ Superstar Jay’s dream has always been to take the world by storm.
On Thursday, December 7th at the famed Apollo Theater in Harlem, Jay’s dreams came to fruition when he was named “Rookie of the Year” at the 2006 Justo Mixtape Awards. Due the tumultuous turn of events at the awards show itself (because of few rotten apples), Jay did not actually receive his award until Friday night at a mixtape awards party. He says “They called me up on the phone to tell me that I won, since the joint was shut down like three categories in.” Regardless, Jay was still ecstatic about receiving the honor.
Superstar Jay has sold more than 50,000 units to date. Jay is the hottest up and coming powerhouse in the mixtape game right now. A large part of his appeal, is his ability assemble killer rosters (including those ever elusive unobtainable artists) and deliver quality product. With several recurring guest spots on national hip hop television shows like BET’s Rap City and MTV’s Direct Effect Jay is proving that he is definitely a force to be reckoned with.
In the wide world of hip hop, there are tons of run of the mill mixtapes…and then there are Superstar Jay tapes. It is evident to anyone within earshot that he pours his soul into every effort. Widely known as “the hood’s favorite deejay”, Jay serves as the voice for the masses, who would otherwise go unheard.
SOHH.com’s Mixtape Report declared him “a legend in the making” and fans all over the globe will wholeheartedly agree. That’s how he keeps them perched on the edges of their seats, eagerly anticipating the next dose of the grime, the grind and the glory that is DJ Superstar Jay.
When asked how he feels about finally being awarded the credit he has long deserved, Jay sums it up by responding “Look, women lie, numbers don’t!” Nuff said.
